Betterly Named Head Coach
Phil Betterly was named the Strasburg Express head coach for the upcoming 2025 season. Phil worked for the Express in 2024 under Cullen Smith where he led the pitching staff to among the league leaders in ERA, WHIP, BAA and Ks prior to roster depletion at the end of the summer. He is no stranger to the Valley Baseball League however, previously acting as the head coach of the Woodstock River Bandits from 2012-15. In 2013 he led Woodstock to the North Division Title and was named VBL Manager of the Year for his efforts.
Phil had prior coaching stops at Shenandoah University and Frostburg State, where he also received his Masters degree in Education. He then moved on to serve as Director of Throwing / Pitching at the Primal 1 Player Development Academy in Maryland. Phil’s expertise in biomechanics and player movement paved the way for his current role as Strength and Conditioning Coach at Shenandoah University.
