Hawkins Hit Streak

Lost in the chaos of this week was the conclusion of Brett Hawkins (Young Harris) hit streak, ending at 13 games after a hitless affair in Staunton on Wednesday afternoon. Not one to jinx streaks, I intentionally opted to not include that note in each game recap. With his streak in the rearview mirror however, let's take a look at what Brett has quietly accomplished this summer.

Brett came to us in somewhat perplexing fashion, being released from the La Crosse Loggers (Northwoods League) despite being 8th in the league in average (.361) and 2nd in doubles (7) following 83 AB's at the time of his release. The Loggers loss was the Express gain however and Hawkins has consistently excelled since stepping foot in Strasburg.

In 41 total games this summer not only has he produced hit streaks of 10 games (Northwoods) and 13 games (Valley League), he has also amassed 18 multi-hit efforts. Hawkins has recorded at least one hit in 35 games and reached based in 37 of his 41 total games played.

Brett has a combined batting average of .324 (57/176) on the summer, which would place him inside the top 20 of the VBL. Additionally he has collected 13 doubles, 2 home runs, 19 RBI and 33 runs scored. Had all of this been accomplished in the VBL he would rank 16th in average, tied for 3rd in doubles and tied for 5th in runs scored. Most impressively he did all of this while posting a combined strikeout rate of only 17%...a rather low number in the modern baseball era.

In all reality he should have been an All Star in both the Northwoods and the Valley but, due to his time being split, couldn't earn a nod in either. You're an All Star to us Brett...thank you!
